Dodt makes it an Aussie double

Queenslander Andrew Dodt made it a double for Australia with a last-ditch win in the True Thailand Classic on the European Tour tonight.

Following Su Oh's magnificent triumph in the Volvek Australian Ladies Masters, 29-year-old Dodt ralled with a final-round 67 to win the Thailand event by a shot at Black Mountain.

It was his second European Tour win, but his first in five years after a rough stretch in which he lost his playing card.

Fellow-Queenslander Scott Hend finished in a tie for second with Thailand's Thongchai Jaidee after he led for much of the final round. A bogey at the par-four 17th, when he tried to drive the green, left Hend needing an eagle at the last to reach a playoff with Dodt, but his chip from the fringe missed narrowly.

Jaidee came even closer. Trailing Dodt's 16-under by a shot, he hit the green in two at the par-five 18th and had a long putt for the outright win. But the local hero three-putted, ultimately missing from two metres with a putt for a playoff with Dodt, who was waiting in the scorers' hut.

"I'm speechless, it's just come out of nowhere,'' he said afterward. "I played well yesterday, but I didn't think I'd come out on top.

"To be honest, losing my card two years ago was probably the best thing that could've happened to me. I went home last year, spent 12 months at home, played the Asian tour again, found myself again, found my game. To be in the winners' circle again, it's unbelievable.''

It was just his third career win as a professional. He won in Asia in 2010 and took out the Queensland Open in 2014 as he recovered his best golf.

Today's win is worth $300,000 to the man who won the Australian amateur strokeplay championship in 2007.

It also gives him an exemption on the European Tour until the end of 2016.
