Cobram Barooga GC welcomed forty-seven pairs this morning for the first event of the Victorian Women’s Country Championship week.
Played since 1979, the 36-hole Victorian Women’s Country Foursomes Championship gives players a taste test of each course before the Country Championship and Glenelg Cup kicks off tomorrow.
Thick fog blanketed the West Course this morning which was reminiscent of the infamous fog delay for the final round of the last championship the club hosted in 2013. It was touch and go as the last group teed off, however following a slow start and a few minor delays the forty-seven pairs completed their first round in brilliant winter sunshine.
It was a dominating display of golf from 2016 Country Champion Casey Wild of Wodonga and 2016 runner-up Warrnambool/Port Fairy’s Jo Flaherty, capitalizing on their 8 shot lead in the morning to be crowned champions. This was an outstanding fourth time in the last five years Wild has etched her name on the Marion Dwyer Cup and a first for Flaherty. The champions carded a solid pair of 74s to finish on 3 over par 148 to win by 12 shots from Johanna Wyllie (Tambo Valley) & Jess Pickwick (Kilmore).
Wyllie and Pickwick were awarded medallist nett honours (as per the tournament conditions pairs can only win a maximum of one trophy) with a 36-hole nett score of 156. The runner-up scratch trophy went to Helen Pascoe (Buninyong) and Rebecca Thomas (Leongatha) on 166.
Best nett rounds went to Trish Rogers and Carmen Lovi of Maffra in round one with Betty McGuinness (Buninyong) and Paula Bandy (Midlands) victorious in the afternoon.
Round 1 of the Country Championship and Glenelg Cup will begin at 11:00am tomorrow morning on both West and Old Courses.
