Western Australia will take the overnight lead following the opening day of the 2018 Australian Girls' Interstate Teams Matches at Royal Perth. The girls notched up their first win in convincing fashion with a 4 – 1 victory against South Australia. After defeating Queensland in the morning, the Composite team was full of confidence, but the experience of the WA line-up was too strong overcoming the combined Tasmania, NT and ACT group 3 – 2.
Victoria notched up a solid victory in the morning against defending champions NSW. With three matches comfortably up two thirds of the way through the second round Victoria looked like they would also close with two wins but a spirited fightback from South Australia put a halt to that plan. Strong performances from skipper Jin-Young Yun, Charley Jacobs and Tilly Miels secured South Australia a 3-2 win.
WA came into the week as favourites and they have certainly laid a solid foundation in chase of the Burtta Cheney Cup. Victoria, South Australia and the Composite team now sit one match behind the WA line-up.
