Donohoe wins 7th Women’s NSW Senior C’ship title

Day 5 Friday 30 March 2012

It was an exciting day of play today, with the match play Finals in the 2012 Women’s NSW Senior Championship at Coffs Harbour. In the Championship it was down to two outstanding golfers. 2011 Women’s NSW Senior Champion Jacqui Morgan from Monash CC and six-time NSW Senior Championship winner and current Australian Women&aposs Senior Champion Sylvia Donohoe from Narooma GC. Not surprisingly, it was an exact rematch of the Final from the same event last year. The match was played in great spirit, and had a good crowd following for the duration. There was little splitting the pair over the first nine, squaring three holes, Donohoe winning four holes, Morgan taking two. With Donohoe two up leading into the back nine she extended her lead to three up after the 10th. Morgan continued to fight back, winning the 11th, however Donohoe was just too strong, winning three of the next six holes played, two of those with birdies. On the 13th Donohoe put her second shot to within a foot from of the flag, sinking it for a birdie. Donohoe took the spoils on the 15th hole, 4/3, giving her an astonishing 7th Women’s NSW Senior Championship title, to go along with her seven Australian Women’s Senior Championship titles an outstanding feat. The Finals of all age group categories were also played today. The locals Coffs Harbour ladies members have a strong contingent, with three contesting their age group Final. In the 55-59 years division it was local Coffs Harbour member Ada Lynch against Rhonda Magner from Concord. It was a strong performance from Magner, who was victorious over Lynch 7/5. A tough match was expected in the 60-64 years age category where Anne Jackson from Ballina Golf Club took on Nicky Moon from Federal Golf Club in the ACT. It went right down to the wire, Moon 1 up with one to play. Jackson struggled on the final hole one of the bunkers, handing Moon the win 2up. It was a consistent performance from Fay McDonald from Urunga Golf Club in the 65-69 years division, defeating local Coffs Harbour member Judith Kruse, 5/4. In the 70+ years the match it was again a repeat of the 2011 Final between Joyce Williamson from Concord Golf Club and Gloria Hickey from Coffs Harbour Golf Club. In what was a thrilling match, it went down to the wire finishing on the 22nd hole. It was last year s winner Williamson who eventually won, defeating Hickey. Congratulations to all ladies who participated this week, and thank you to Coffs Harbour Golf Club for hosting the event.

Day 4 Thursday 29 March 2012

Semi Finals were played today in the 2012 Women’s NSW Senior Championship at Coffs Harbour Golf Club. It was the battle of big guns in the Championship Semi Finals with last year s winner Jacqui Morgan (Monash GC) contesting Pauline Jeffrey (Queanbeyan GC), and seven-time winner Sylvia Donohoe (Narooma GC) challenging Lynne Townsend (Wollongong GC). Both matches were tight, however in the end it was Morgan and Donohoe who came out on top, 5/4 and 5/3 respectively, ensuring an exciting Final match tomorrow. Interestingly, tomorrow s Final is a rematch of last year s Final. Donohoe has won this event seven times previously, while Morgan will be looking to make it back-to-back Championships. Tee off tomorrow is 8.40am. In the 55-59 years age category Rhonda Magner (Concord GC) had a good win over local Romana Murphy 4/3. In the other match it was the battle of the locals, with Ada Lynch defeating Gayle Jones 3/2. Magner and Lynch will play each other in the Final tomorrow, kicking off at 8.30am. In the 60-64 years Anne Jackson (Ballina GC) was successful 4/2 over Maree Vincent (Waratah GC). It was the battle of those from our nation s capital in the second match, with Nicky Moon (Federal GC) accounting for Chris Taylor (Royal Canberra GC) in a tight match, 2/1. Jackson and Moon will contest the Final tomorrow at 8.20am. The 65-69 year semi-finals Urunga GC s Fay McDonald won her match 6/4 against Eileen Rodwell (Terrey Hills GC), while local Judith Kruse (Coffs Harbour GC) defeated Judith Tunks (Oatlands GC) 3/1. McDonald and Kruse will battle it out in the Final tomorrow, starting at 8.10am. In the age category 70+ years Joyce Williamson (Concord GC) had a strong win over Marian Hinds (Belconnen Magpies GC) 7/6. It was another battle of the locals in the second match, with Gloria Hickey winning her match against Margaret Morison 2 up. Williamson and Hickey will contest the Final tomorrow at 8.00am. The Championship Final and all age category Finals will be played tomorrow from 8.00am. Full draw is available below:
