Doris Chambers Cup turns 64

Over 150 Victorian Golf Clubs are participating in this year’s Doris Chambers Cup state finals. The perpetual trophy is one of the most historic, as the event was first played in 1950. Today’s state final took place at Eastwood Golf Club under perfect weather and course conditions. Participating clubs came from far and wide with some travelling to the event from as far as Mildura, Coomealla, Horsham and other remote Victorian locations. This support and participation reflects the importance of this event within the women’s calendar.

The challenging format (Foursomes stableford) tested all competitors who need to be congratulated as they had won their club qualifying finals to reach the state final.

However, the undulating and heavily tree lined fairways combined with the tricky greens were successfully overcome by Heather Cuthberston & Denise Bending from Beaufort. The pairs 36 stableford points posted in the morning made them today’s overall winners as the afternoon field failed to produce a better score.Heather’s & Denise’s names will be the first ones to be engraved on this prestigious cup in 2014. They were closely followed by the Kyabram Valley View pair of Helen Emery and Tracey Wade who recorded a score of 35 stableford points to leave them just one point adrift of overall honours.

Congratulations also to Long Island’s Sandra McCaw & Jenny Rabl and Numurkah’s Julie Daniel & Felicity Both as the runners-up  in their respective fields.

Players and caddies were not only grateful but also complementary about this picturesque club and their hospitality. “Playing with the beautiful Dandenongs in the background is very special” commented a player. So, thanks Eastwood Golf Club for a great day!

Long Island will be the host for the second state final to take place on Friday 24 October in which mainly metropolitan clubs will be represented. With another favourable weather forecast predicted it is sure to be a great day.
