Dramatic climax for Nationwide Aussies

Marc Turnesa beat off strong challenges from David Mathis and Jon Mills to win the Miccosukee Championship on the Nationwide Tour, but Australian David McKenzie faces an anxious week ahead of the Tour&aposs final event of the year. For Turnesa, though, a final hole bogey was not enough to prevent him from claiming a one-stroke win at the Miccosukee in a result that took him into the top 25 on the Nationwide Tour&aposs money list and into the PGA Tour for next season. Turnesa started the tournament in 43rd position on the money list, but his 15-under overall score saw him claim the $103,500 prize money for first, lifting him into 13th on the overall money list, a position from which he cannot be displaced from the top 25 who advance to the PGA tour. The same cannot be said for McKenzie, though. The Australian completed the final round in Miami by posting a respectable four-under 67 to be six-under overall for the tournament, rising to 23rd on the overall money list. However, with the Tour&aposs top 60 players in the field for next weekend&aposs Nationwide Tour Championship, 40-year-old McKenzie will have to produce his best golf in order to avoid being displaced from the top 25 by the 35 players currently gunning for the final positions on the PGA Tour for 2008. The field for next weekend&aposs event will include a significant percentage of Australians, although Nick Flanagan (second on money list), Jason Day (fourth) and Matt Jones (seventh) also cannot be displaced. The remaining Australians, therefore in contention for a position and playing at the final event will be Scott Gardiner (36), Aron Price (41), Greg Chalmers (42) and New Zealander Tim Wilkinson (44). Wilkinson was actually the second-best placed Australasian after McKenzie at the Miccosukee, finishing on five-under overall after carding a three-under 68 on the final day. Further back, Chalmers finished at one-under overall while New Zealand&aposs Michael long was at three-over. Australians David Luterus, Price and Gardiner, however, all missed the cut and did not play over the weekend while Bradley Hughes was forced to withdraw with a wrist injury.
