Drewitt wins Golf SA Amateur Classic

Long Reef&aposs Brett Drewitt has completed his first major Australian amateur stroke play win, with victory at the 2011 Golf SA Amateur Classic at Glenelg Golf Club. Holding a commanding six-shot lead going into today&aposs final round, Drewitt carded a final round par 71 for a four round total of 7-under par 277 and a four shot victory over New South Welshmen Daniel Bringolf. The 20-year-old Drewitt, who carded a brilliant course record 64 in Friday&aposs second round, was understandably conservative in his approach to today&aposs final round, which was highlighted by an eagle 3 at the par-5 12th. “I had a six shot lead and it was all about holding onto it,” said Drewitt following the conclusion of his round. “I got a bit nervous towards the end and Daniel (Bringolf) was playing really well. “It got a bit tight towards the end but it&aposs great to finally come out on top and get my first stroke play win. On a challenging final day which was again affected by rain, Daniel Bringolf (The Australian) and Rory Bourke (Southern) were the day&aposs biggest movers with both players carding excellent 2-under par rounds of 71. Bringolf finished the tournament in second position on 281 with Burke finishing third a further shot back on 282. Drewitt though wasn&apost to be denied and proved a model of consistency throughout his final round. “I was really pleased with the way I closed it out, made few clutch putts and held my nerve,” he said. “When the rain came it was all about hitting the middle of the green and not playing as aggressively as I had in the first three rounds.” Alex Hendrick (285, Grange) and Anthony Houston (Kingswood) rounded out the top five. In total only four players broke par on the final day with Kyle Grant (Mona Vale) carding a 2-under par 69 and Houston carding a final round 1-under par 70.
