Dunsborough Lakes Golf Club, located in south-western Western Australia, is the proud winner of May’s MyGolf Centre of the Month award.
After registering as a MyGolf Centre in August 2015, Dunsborough Lakes was fast to become an active centre, uploading its first program in October. The program quickly enrolled 14 willing MyGolf participants, excited to learn the basic skills of golf.
The Dunsborough Lakes MyGolf program was originally initiated by two retired high school teachers. Dunsborough Lakes MyGolf co-ordinator Sue Reynolds explains: “While diligently completing the Community Instructor’s course, they managed to get the first group of a dozen students up and running with the help of five other club volunteers.”
Dunsborough Lakes was soon blessed with the addition of Marty Thomas, a PGA member.
Since Marty’s inclusion, the group’s numbers have steadily grown, with a gradual increase occurring through word of mouth about the town.
“This has been especially pleasing as students and parents were very keen to continue through the winter period,” Sue said.
“The board has also been very supportive as the club is keen to develop a strong junior membership over the next few years.”
While Dunsborough is a relatively small regional centre, there are currently three primary schools in the town with another on the way and an increasing number of young families in the area.
“Dunsborough is also a very popular retirement spot (being in the Margaret River region) and we have seen at least 10 different grandparents turn up at times to watch a grandchild in the group. All looks good for the future development of junior golf in the Dunsborough area,” Sue explained.
Since its initial program, Dunsborough Lakes has successfully implemented two further MyGolf Junior programs, showcasing a number of loyal participants who are motivated to learn more about the game.
While the students are still very new to golf, they hope to enter their first MyGolf competition this July. We wish them all the best of luck!
