Greg Ebinger (Spring Valley) fired a magnificent 73 in tough conditions to take out the Yarra Yarra “Ray Barned” Senior Amateur for 2018. Ebinger had three birdies on his way to a two shot victory in windy and testing conditions. Runner-up to Ebinger was Rossdale’s Geoffrey Charnley who came in with a three over par 75.

The nett section saw a great score of 67 produced by Yowani Country Club member Lynton Ellis Dixon. Dixon, who plays off a handicap of 19, made the trek down from Canberra to experience the Melbourne sandbelt courses. Runner-up to Dixon was Portsea’s Alan Bullas who came in with a 73 nett playing off a handicap of 4.

For the first time in the event’s history, women were invited to join the competition. It was Heather Harley (Kooringal) who took out the scratch stableford event with a score of 20 points. Elizabeth Alston (Winchelsea) was the champion in the women’s stableford section with a score of 32 points off her handicap of 24.

The event is named after former life member of Yarra Yarra, Ray Barned. Ray was a former captain of the club, elected to the VGA council in 1994 and has made a significant contribution to golf in the state in the areas of senior golf, rules, handicapping, junior development and course rating.

The sandbelt week will continue tomorrow as players head to Kingston Heath.
