After playing the Nomura Cup in Abu Dhabi just days ago, Ben Eccles has flown direct to Western Australia for a taste of life as a professional golfer.

The 20-year-old is set to play in both the Western Australia PGA Championships and the Western Australian Open in successive weeks.

His 12th place finish in the United Arab Emirates was a confidence boost for Eccles who has earned himself a reputation for his steady play.

“It was a bit of a test last week. There was a bit of wind about but I hit the ball really well and gained some confidence from it so I’m feeling good about my game.”

Aiming to turn professional at some stage next year, Eccles says the next two weeks will be all about the experience.

“I’d like to put myself in contention in the next two weeks and see how we go.

“I’m planning to turn pro next year and I want the most experience I can get so playing these next two weeks will be good.”

Eccles landed in Kalgoorlie on Tuesday morning and played his first practice round on the course today.

“There’s a little bit [of jetlag] but I’m just trying to get as much out of the golf course as I can with the time that I have and get in some good practice.

“It’s obviously a bit hotter than what it would be back in Melbourne but coming from Abu Dhabi it’s quite nice.

“The course is great, it’s in great condition. It’s going to be a bit of a challenge off the tee with all of the wasteland so I’m really looking forward to it.”

The Victorian skipper will line up against some familiar competition in Jake McLeod, Antonio Murdaca and Jarryd Felton. After representing their respective States earlier in the year at the Interstate Series as amateurs, all three have turned professional.

“It’s a little different with them playing for money this week it might put a bit of pressure on them.

“Obviously it would be nice to beat them but I’m just trying to do my own thing and not get caught up in all that.”

The Western Australian PGA Championship begins on the 29th of October followed by the Western Australian Open on the 5th of November.
