Eccles keeps Canadian reins

Geelong’s Ben Eccles remains the man to beat in the Canadian Amateur Championship.

Eccles added a second-round two-under-par 70 on the Weston Golf and Country Club course in Ontario to share top spot on the leaderboard at seven under.

The captain of the champion Victorian team in this year’s Interstate Series had shot a five-under-par 66 at the Lambton Golf and Country Club near Toronto.

Eccles, who splits his time between Torquay Sands and 13th Beach courses at home, is level with Nova Scotia’s Eric Banks after a marathon day two with some players forced to play 36 holes to catch up after a rainswept day one.

It was an uncharacteristically inconsistent round from Eccles, shooting four bogeys but minimising their effect with six birdies.

Eccles leads the Australian contingent with the Gold Coast’s Kade McBride the next best at one under overall with five holes to play in his second round.

His fellow Queenslander Maverick Antcliff couldn’t maintain his first-day form with a 75 to follow his 69, but at one over is safely inside the projected four-over cut line.

Sydney’s Dale Brandt-Richards managed a 73 to complete his first round, but a second-round 76 will mean an early finish.

The top 70 players and ties in the 240-strong field will compete in the third and fourth rounds at Weston later this week.
