The Grange Golf Club is one of Australia’s premier sporting venues with two internationally rated 18 hole championship golf courses both ranked in the top 50 golf courses in Australia.
The West Course was redesigned and reconstructed by Michael Clayton Golf Design with the redevelopment completed in 2007.
The East Course has recently been reconstructed by Greg Norman Golf Course Design. The project was completed in 2012 and has produced a championship layout that will challenge and reward players of all skills.
The Sunday Mail’s Ben Hook and Royal Adelaide Teaching Professional Daniel Blackwell reviewed two holes at The Grange one on the East and one on the West Course.
East 14th – 373m Par 4
Playing Tip
Tee shot: The longer hitter has a target bunker on the left side of the fairway to hit over. Those that cannot carry the ball over this target bunker have a large landing area right of this bunker.
From the Fairway: This shot will be one of the longer shots you will play into a par 4, made longer if playing into the prevailing wind. At least 2/3 of the green is visible from the fairway with no trouble in front of this area. If the pin is in the punch bowl right, the base is blind but you can see the flag and ensure you are long enough to carry the bunker.
Around and on the Green: A shot from the left of the green will give you a clear view of any pin placement. A beautiful green with rolling mounds and bowls will see some great chipping and putting challenges.
West 17th – 415m Par 4
This is the best hole on the course and whilst it is probably also the most demanding its difficulty is only one determinate of its quality. The fairway is lined with pines making this a beautiful looking hole and the natural movement of the ground makes for exhilarating golf. A drive down the right half of the fairway opens a clear view of the green but a small dune further blocks the view of the green for those who have driven left. A deep bunker lines the right side of the green and this par four asks for a pair of perfectly played strokes.
