63 players took part in the 2018 Royal Melbourne Seniors Classic on the East Course, playing many holes that will challenge the Internationals and Americans in next year’s Presidents Cup. The course was set up in magnificent condition with the famous fast greens proving a challenge for all competitors.
The typical Melbourne winter weather continued for the final event in the Sandbelt Series with breaks of sunshine shooting through between passing showers. David Edwards took out the scratch event for the men with a fine score of 76. Edwards, who plays his golf at Pennant Hills in Sydney, made his Royal Melbourne experience worthwhile. Two behind Edwards was Geoffrey Charnley from Rossdale who finished with 78.
Staying true to his name, Ian Winter battled his way through the chilly conditions to take home the nett trophy with 71. Also on 71, but falling short on a countback, was Cape Schanck’s Ian Henry.
For the first time a women’s section was introduced, with Kay Barcelon from Patterson River taking out the inaugural honours with 25 stableford points. One behind was Elizabeth Alston (Winchelsea) who came in with a score of 24.
Today concluded the 2018 August Sandbelt challenge for the senior golfers. Players from all over Australia competed in this years events and we would like to congratulate everyone who took part. Golf Victoria would like to thank all clubs who hosted this year, allowing players to experience their exceptional layouts.
