England has claimed its first Ashes Trophy of 2009 with a resounding win over Australia at Royal Birkdale Golf Club. AIS/Golf Australia National Squad member Matt Jager continued in the form which won him the New Zealand Amateur Championship winning three of his four matches including both singles matches. The Western Australian defeated Luke Goddard 5&3 in their final round overnight. From there, England showed their dominance and experience on the links layout. Sam Hutsby and Luke Goddard defeated Brendan Smith (NSW) and Daniel Nisbet (QLD) 4&2 while Dale Whitnell and Matt Haines defeated Jager and Jason Scrivener 5&3. It was similar story in the singles as Matt Haines, Charlie Ford, Dale Whitnell and Sam Hutsby were all victorious. It is England s first victory in The Ashes and the first time it has been played on English soil. Australia won the tournament in 2007 and 2008.
