Exciting conclusion to 2015 Mazda Vic Four Ball Final

The 2015 Mazda Victorian Four Ball Championship concluded today with the champions determined after the second round at The National Golf Club. Allan Quek & Ricky Aow continued their red hot form from round one to post two rounds of 49 and 42 for a 91 point total. The Wellington Links members dominated the Sorrento layout in Round 1 and battled through the strong winds in Round 2.

“Sorrento suited us. It was short and we aren’t long hitters”. Today was very very tough. We tried hard and just got over the line”. Quek said post round.

The pair qualified at Rosanna with 43 points on Friday 30 January.

In the women’s section, Sale members Pam Schaper & Karen Brown played some exceptional golf across the two days to clinch the championship by four stableford points. Qualifying at the Sale regional round with 47 points, Schaper & Brown managed 42 at Sorrento and a fantastic 39 points at The National in near gale force winds. Runner’s Up were Dawn Sleightholm (Devilbend) & Susan Dawson (Mornington) with 41 & 36 points.

The mixed section, in its first year, consisted of 20 qualifiers fighting for the inaugural title. In the end, a countback was to separate eventual winners Heather Lindup (GSM) & Harry Smiles (Peninsula-Kingswood) from runners up David Greenhill (Commonwealth) & Fiona Telford (Brighton) on a 84 point total.

Harry Smiles joins his mother on a four ball trophy, after Pat Smiles & her partner Jenny Foster won the women’s championship back in 2013.

60 men, 20 mixed and 20 women played the final over 36-holes at Sorrento on Monday 16 March and The National (Ocean Course) on Tuesday 17 March.
