Family Championships decided at Barwon Heads

The Victorian Family Championships returned to the Bellarine Peninsula this weekend at the stunning Barwon Heads Golf Club. This is the first year the Men’s, Women’s and Mixed sections have all been contested on the same day. While the sky was overcast for most of the day, having minimal wind around made it a very pleasant day for all who contested the Championship.

Another first this year was the running of the “Fambrose Challenge”- a 2 person Ambrose on the Par 3 Big Hole course. 11 family pairs took to the course in the morning, the vast majority of which played carried on and played in the afternoon field. The winners of the inaugural event were the Brother combination of Jake (Camberwell) and Blair (Buninyong) Hart with a score of 23 off the stick, with a total handicap of 1 and a half, nett 21 and a half. Runners up on a 7-way countback was Suzanne (Box Hill) and Lachlan (RACV Cape Schank) Burns with the same score.

In the main event, the Family Championships, Greg and Andrew Lynch (Peninsula Kingswood) were victorious in the Men’s section with 46 points, off a countback from fellow Peninsula-Kingswood members Steven and Tom Blight.

In the Women’s section, Kerry Peterson (Gisborne) and her sister Pamela Majek (Moe) were clear winners with 42 points ahead of the runners up from Royal Melbourne, Georgina and Samantha Leigh. Peterson remarked how excited she was to win this prestigious event with her sister who has only been playing golf for 9 months.

The most outstanding scores of the day however came from the mixed section, with Stuart and Lauren McClelland (Curlewis) taking out second place on a countback from Phil and Cate Shay (Queenscliff), both on 46 points. This fantastic total was just one point short of the winners from Peterborough, Loretta Roberts and her son Jacob.

Golf Victoria would once again like to thank the Barwon Heads Golf Club for presenting the course in such beautiful condition and providing magnificent hospitality. The 2016 Family Championships and Fambrose will again be held here on Sunday 27 November.
