Federal favourites off to a flyer

Royal Adelaide's Billy Cawthorne, Lawry Flynn of Brisbane GC and Jed Morgan of Royal Queensland are in a three -way tie for the lead after matching five-under par rounds of 67 after the first round of the Federal Amateur Open in the ACT.

On a day when the conditions were perfect for scoring, 39 players finihsed on Par or better.

Josh Armstrong the number 7th ranked Australian amateur and boys number two had 68 along with Robbie Morrison and Mark Hutson from New Zealand.

Jordan Ayre from Royal Canberra Golf Club was the best local on 71 with Adam Thorpe and Brett Levier from Federal Golf Club shooting 72.

The Women's Championship saw 7 players shoot scores of Par or better with Sophie Yip, the 13 year old superstar from Concord Golf Club and Konomi Matsumoto from Victoria Golf Club leading after shooting matching  2-under-par 71's.

Montana Strauss from The National carded a 73 while Grace Kim, the 2nd ranked Australian Girl and 80th ranked amateur in the world shot 74.
