Ferguson just short in Scotland

They may not have reached the record scores of Stenson and Mickelson at The Open, but WA's Ben Ferguson and India's Rayhan Thomas left the field in their wake at the Scottish Boys Strokeplay at Lanark Golf Club.

After a two hole playoff it was Thomas who prevailed as the champion, leaving Ferguson with another Scottish-based runner-up finish after making the final of the St Andrew's Boys Amateur in 2014.

Ferguson held a one shot lead after his opening round 66 on Tuesday, and The Vines golfer had to sit on that lead for a further 24 hours after the second round was cancelled due to lightning.

This meant the 2016 WA Amateur Medallist took his slim advantage into the 36-hole final day — but as 10 players teed off under par in the morning, only two would remain by midday with Thomas on 5-under and Ferguson one back.

After attending The Open at Royal Troon earlier in the week, it may have occurred to Ferguson that he and Thomas we’re looking at a Stenson-Mickelson type showdown for the championship that afternoon.

Ferguson’s final round of 69 was enough to peg back Thomas’ lead who bogeyed the final hole to force a playoff after Thomas took the outright lead on 17 with a birdie. The pair finished on as the only golfers under par and six shots ahead of the rest of the field.

Thomas’ playoff win means he adds the Scottish Boys title to his Qatar Amateur title from earlier in the year.
