West Aussie Connor Fewkes has clinched the 2018 Australian Boys’ Amateur with after a two-shot victory at Gosnells Golf Club on Friday.
In a breakthrough victory for the Kalgoorlie left-hander, final-day scores of 72 and 67 were enough to claim the title at five under ahead of an armada of Sandgropers in Jordan Jung (-3), Jose De Sousa (-1), Cooper Geddes (-1) and Connor McKinney (+3), with Queenslander Louis Dobbelaar the lone interstate rival in third at two under.
Fewkes was able to hold his nerve throughout the final round, with De Sousa leading by a shot with three holes remaining.
The Gosnells local found the trees on 16 to make bogey, while Fewkes was clean on approach to record a telling birdie.
The WA skipper safely recorded two more birdies to finish with 67, two ahead of Jung.
Fewkes started the final round behind both Geddes and De Sousa, however with two birdies on the front nine and a further two on the back, the championship was his.
The win guarantees Fewkes entry to the Australian Open at The Lakes Golf Club in November.
His win meant both WA captains claimed titles in Perth this week with Maddison Hinson-Tolchard securing the girls' title.
