Field set for national senior showdown

So many legitimate chances, but only one title on offer.

That’s the scenario confronting the field after it was finalized for next week’s Australian Men’s Senior Amateur Championship at spectacular Manly Golf Club in northern Sydney.

Gordon Claney, of Victoria, is back to defend his title after a stellar year which has left him atop of the Australian Men’s Senior Amateur Rankings.

Fellow Victorian Greg Rhodes will also be a top contender after a recent win in the SA Secondary Event to go with other top performances, including winning the NSW Senior Amateur and runner-up in the Royal Melbourne Senior Classic.

Rhodes and Claney have both recently been selected to represent Australia in the Asia Pacific Senior Teams Championship.

Other top contenders include Stefan Albinski, who is hot for a fourth title in his home state, Ian McPherson (WA), Sal Ballard (Vic) and Ian Frost (Vic), who’s fresh from a win in the SA Senior Amateur.

The event, which runs from Tuesday-Thursday next week, is in its 35th year, having been played since 1981.

With the winner claiming the Kerry Packer Trophy, it is Australia’s premier men’s senior event.

It is played over 54 holes of strokeplay with a presentation reception after the final round.
