Round One:

Findlay shoots 72 to lead the Kooringal Senior Amateur

The first round of the Kooringal Senior Amateur way played this afternoon under crystal clear skies. A modest southerly wind that progressively intensified later in the afternoon challenged players along the par 71 layout.

On the beautifully manicured, tree-lined Kooringal layout where accuracy and shot strategy are essential, the opening round saw four-marker and local member, Bill Findlay, lead the way with a one over-par 72. Starting on the 10th hole, Findlay struggled early with bogies on the 14th, 16th and 17th holes, going out in a three-over par 38. While the early bogeys halted his initial run, a stellar inward nine of two-under par 34 thanks to birdies at the 1st, 3rd 4th holes was enough to grab the lead in the events inaugural year. Yarra Yarra member, Guy Krall, is running second just one shot adrift after an excellent round of 73 this afternoon. Robert Burford (Devil Bend) and Gordon Claney (Kingston Heath) sit in third position, both shooting 75 today.
Ross Liddle (Yowani), Adrian Rossi (Commonwealth) as well as Findlay and Krall are tied in the nett section after firing 68 nett today. They lead Brighton member, Ian Henry by just one stroke heading into the second and final round. Also notable was Wayne Phillips of the Heritage Golf Club who shot 70 nett this afternoon.
The event is one of five new senior events in the 2013 calendar that now encompasses 27 events for the year, including newly added women’s sections in seven of those events.
The 2013 title concludes with the final round at Kooringal Golf Club on the morning of Wednesday January 16.
