Flanagan starts well

Nick Flanagan is the best placed Australian after the first round of the Legends Reno-Tahoe Open in Nevada. The New South Welshman shot five birdies on his way to a three-under par 69 to be four shots off leader Jeff Overton. His compatriots struggled on the opening day with Andrew Buckle (-2) and Matt Jones (-1) the only other Australians to post scores under par. USA&aposs Overton shot four successive birdies from holes two to five to get off to a cracking start in his round. A further three birdies on the back nine had him sitting two shots clear at seven-under. Fellow Americans Harrison Frazar, Marco Dawson, John Merrick and the UK&aposs Brian Davis are all well in contention at five-under. Of the other Australians in the field, Steve Allan is still a chance at even-par, while Steve Elkington (+1), Nathan Green (+2) and Gavin Coles (+2) all have plenty of work to do. Mark Hensby and David Lutterus will both struggle to make the cut after posting disappointing rounds of 77 and 78 respectively.
