Forster-Tuncurry lady golfers receive special recognition

Betty Harris, Vera Champion and Priscilla Jeffery had much to celebrate at the Forster-Tuncurry Golf Club. Both Betty and Vera were presented with a 50+ Years of Service to the Game of Golf by the Club and Priscilla Jeffery, one of the Patronesses, was presented with a Life Membership. PRISCILLA JEFFERY has been a full playing member of the Forster-Tuncurry Golf Club for 66 years and is the longest playing member of the Golf Club, having joined in 1947 when she was 20. The Associates were so eager to have their game of golf several with pre-school children employed a baby-sitter, who cared for the children in a roped off area at the front of the Club House, while the ladies were out on the course. During this long period of time Priscilla served on the Ladies Committee and also held positions of Vice President and House Convener spanning a period of at least twenty years. Priscilla has donated numerous trophies during the past 66 years and continues to donate trophies. Priscilla is a Patroness of the Ladies Club and has been for the past six years. Golf is not her only talent. Priscilla is a great cook and always making pies and cakes for the Club&aposs fund raising stalls or afternoon teas on special days. Recently on their Sally Whitehouse Memorial Day, an event held to raise funds for the Great Lakes Hospice (Oncology), she arrived with eight delicious apple pies. Priscilla is an inspiration to the members and she still enjoys taking part in competitions at both Tuncurry and Forster courses, and is certainly not a fair weather golfer. Last Tuesday Priscilla won the Division 2 Monthly Medal. In 2009, 2010 and 2012 Priscilla won the C Grade Foursomes Championship with Betty Harris. Both these ladies are well in their eighties. It just goes to show what a wonderful game golf is…to be still winning Championships and Monthly Medals after 66 years! BETTY HARRIS commenced her golfing days in 1957 at Canowindra Golf Club. Prior to her joining the Club she used to hit a few balls in the paddock. During her 27 years in Canowindra, Betty served on the Committee, was President for many years, Captain several years and was instrumental in starting a Junior program. The Juniors would come after school, and Betty would help them with their golf and ran a competition recording scores and creating an interest in golf which several continue to this day. In 1985 Betty moved to Forster and joined Forster-Tuncurry Golf Club and she still plays at least twice a week. Betty and Priscilla Jeffrey have won Division 3 Foursomes Championship several times and are the current Foursomes Champions a great feat for two octogenarians. Betty is always ready to help with afternoon teas and also the BBQ crew and is also a great cook.
VERA CHAMPION joined East Hills Golf Club in 1958 and later in the 1960 s became a Member of Bankstown Golf Club. She took up the positions of Captain, Treasurer, General Committee Member and was a member of the Pennant Team. In 1985, Vera moved to Forster and joined Forster-Tuncurry Golf Club and was elected on to the Ladies Committee. Vera was a member of the Ladies Committee for over 20 years, taking up the positions of President, Captain, Vice-Captain and Committee Member; she was also a member of the Pennant Team. In 1989 Vera along with Olga Gerathy stood for the Golf Club Board and both ladies were elected as the first ladies on the Forster-Tuncurry Board, a position which Vera held for four years. She still plays golf at least twice a week and represents the Club at Veteran competitions in New South Wales.
