Four through at British Amateur

A healthy batch of four Australians are through to the matchplay section of the British Amateur Championship at Panmure and Carnoustie golf clubs in Scotland.

Although the top-ranked pair of Ryan Ruffels and Lucas Herbert were eliminated after two rounds of stroke play, Sydney’s Harrison Endycott was the stand-out performer, reaching the top 64 seeded equal-seventh in the field of one of the oldest and most prestigious amateur events in the world.

Endycott, who plays out of Avondale Golf Club in Sydney, will play Pierre Mazier of France in the first round of matchplay, after carding a 72 to go with his opening 67. “Again I just tried to keep it out of the trouble,’’ he said. “Carnoustie is so penalising of a stray shot but the conditions rewarded clever play.”

DJ Loypur (Victoria), Taylor MacDonald (Queensland) and Cameron Davis (New South Wales) also progressed to the matchplay section of the event.

But Herbert was out of the running after the first day, and Ruffels missed the cut by a shot after carding 73-71. Both Victorians are ranked in the top 20 in the world.
