It was a beautiful sunny morning for the 86 players who prepared themselves for a hot day at Kew GC in today’s fourth city qualifying round of the 2016 Mazda Victorian Fourball Championship. A total of 33 men’s pairs, 7 women’s pairs and 3 mixed pairs enjoyed fantastic course conditions.
Today’s men’s event saw father and son team Dean & Blake Anderson (Northern) claim victory with a brilliant 49 points, the highest overall score of any qualifying event so far. Closely followed and missing out on the win by a single point, was 2015 Men’s State Final Champions Ricky Aow & Allan Quek (Wellington Links) with another superb round of 48 points. Coming in third place on a countback was Nathan Hudson & Chris Horsley-Wyatt (GSM) with 45 points.
Winners of the women’s event came from Margaret Hyndman & Anne Jebb (Kew) who used their local knowledge to score the top honour with 40 points. Runners up saw Kaye Balazs & Nancy Harris (Commonwealth) finish with 39 points winning on a countback from Pamela Spencer & Heather Den Elzen (Yering Meadows) who finished in third place.
The victorious pair from the mixed event came from Brenda Ryan (Ballarat) & John Moore (Thirteenth Beach) with a solid 41 points. On a countback with 35 points were runners up Debbie Biggs (Ivanhoe Ladies) & Douglas Biggs (Riversdale), and closing out the mixed event were third place winners Saowapa McDowall (Growling Frog) & Struan McDowall (Royal Melbourne).
72 players participated in the second country qualifying event which took place on Sunday 17th January at Horsham GC. Local members dominated, with Horsham pairs taking out each category for the day. In the mixed section, the winners were Geoff & Mary-Anne Burdett who recorded 48 points. Whilst in the women’s event, Caroline Purvis & Margery Rich claimed top prize with 42 points. In the men’s event, Geoff Little & Lewis Gebert continued a great day for the locals with a winning score of 48 points.
The next qualifying round heads to Kingston Heath GC tomorrow, where the championship’s largest qualifying field will take to one of Victoria's finest layouts, followed by Cranbourne GC on Friday 22nd January.
