Fowler leads into final round of Senior Open

Peter Fowler has taken a 3 shot lead heading in to the final round of the 2012 ISPS Handa Australian Senior Open at Royal Perth Golf Club after a solid 2 under par in the second round. Perth returned to true spring weather for Round 2 with the temperature reaching 25 degrees and a reasonable south westerly wind blowing for the most part of the day. Fowler, who teed off at 12.10pm got off to a steady start with a birdie on the par 5 third hole before a bogey on 6 saw him making the turn on even par for the day. A bogey free back 10 holes with birdies on 14 and 18 saw Fowler finish out the day 2 under par, 3 shots ahead of Rookie European Senior Tour professional Tim Elliott who posted 1 under for the day Elliott backed up his opening round of 69 with a further 1 under par 71 putting him in outright second place, one shot in front of David Merriman and joint round 1 leader Terry Price, both sitting on 3 under par. Price who opened the tournament with a 5 under par 67, was not able to back up his round 1 form signing for 2 over par 74 after an unsatisfying day on course. His frustration was also felt by amateur partner Royal Perth member Hans Schutte with the pair only managing to pull together 40 stableford points, putting Hans out of the running to win the amateur teams event. Local knowledge proved the winner in the stableford team event with Royal Perth member Greg Green taking out the honours with stableford points of 45 and 45 for the 2 rounds to win the prize by 1 point. Green featured heavily on the team card with professional partner Lucien Tinkler finding the Royal Perth course a challenge for the first 2 rounds. Green snatches the first place prize from friend and fellow Royal Perth member Kym Thomason, who with professional partner Tim Elliott, posted points rounds of 44 and 45. Round 3 will see the professionals battle it out over the final 18 holes vying for the prestigious Australian Senior Open title with the winner joining names including Wayne Grady and Peter Senior on the honour board. Play gets underway at Royal Perth Golf Club at 9.00am with the leaders teeing off the 1st hole at 10.55am.
