Doug Francis has taken out the 2018 Shepparton Senior Amateur after holding on to his overnight lead. The Metropolitan member and current Victorian Senior Amateur Champion finished on 151 for the two days after he followed up his 74 on Monday with a 77 today. Doug Bachli trophy leader Ian McCleary (Kooringal) tried his best to rein in the lead but ultimately fell just 2 shots short. McCleary, who is enjoying a stellar season, fired the equal best round of the day with 75 but couldn’t quite overcome the 4 shot deficit he left himself after round 1.
The nett trophy saw Wayne Aigner come from 6 behind to take the event by improving on his first day score by 5 shots. Aigner, who plays his golf at Sandhurst, produced the round of the day with a nett 71 playing off a handicap of 7. His overall total of 147 was two shots clear of John Kelly (Metropolitan) who also improved overnight to finish with a 73 on day 2.
Helen Pascoe saluted once again in the women’s scratch stableford, producing yet another victory in her 2018 campaign. Pascoe (Bunniyong) was victorious by 10 shots over Laurence Bargibant who was comfortably runner-up.
The stableford section was extremely tight with a countback needed to split the top 2. It was Kerry Scales (Port Fairy) who came out on top with her scores of 26 and 32 edging out Shepparton’s own Sally Nayler who finished with 27 and 31.
Players were full of praise for the beautiful Shepparton layout and plenty will continue up to Tocumwal for their senior event on Thursday & Friday.
