On a wet and windy Melbourne Autumn day, the finals of the 2018 Friday Women’s Pennant competition were decided on Friday 11 May at Woodlands and Yarra Yarra.
Three of the four finals saw conclusive results beginning with the Division 1 final at Woodlands where Huntingdale defeated Commonwealth by five and half matches to one and a half. The Huntingdale lower order of Maria Clarke, Trinity Francis and Roslyn Farrell all secured solid wins to set the platform for the flag triumph.
A win to Commonwealth’s No. 4 Joanne Elmslie over Huntingdale Team Captain Chrissy Skinner briefly halted the momentum before further wins to Rong Kwok-Xu and Kerry Henningsen sealed the result. The match between No.1 players in Commonwealth’s Louise Briers and Huntingdale’s Heather Gellatly was declared halved by the Team Captains once the overall result had been determined. Huntingdale’s win was its sixth Division 1 Friday Women’s Pennant title in seven years and third in a row.
In Division 2, Kingston Heath defeated Green Acres by five matches to two. Begging at No. 7, wins by Christine Stevens, Coralie Cazaly, Jennifer Damyon and Trudy Marget proved the difference. Green Acres No.1 Vanessa Cariss was her team’s sole winner with a six and four win against Ronwyn Dudfield. The matches between the respective club No. 2 and 3 players were declared halved by the Team Captains once the final result was determined.
The closest final of the day came in Division 3 at Yarra Yarra, where Woodlands defeated Centenary Park by four matches to three. As is common in Pennant golf, it all came down to close matches and final hole victories to No. 7 Monica Itschert and No. 3 Kay Mahlook proved the difference for Woodlands. Centenary Park can take some consolation in reaching a final for a second successive year and promotion into Division 2 for 2019.
Spring Valley wrapped up the Division 4 season in style with a six match to one victory over Ranfurlie. Comfortable wins to Heather Cadwallader, Jan Pitcher and Lyn Treloar set the platform for the flag winning performance with Team Captain Margaret Willcox, Pamela Wheelens and Lesley Meadowcroft completing the win. Ranfurlie’s Kay Grant was the club’s only winner on the day with a final hole victory over Spring Valley’s Julie Sheldrake.
32 clubs participated in 2018 Friday Women’s Pennant involving 224 players each week across the seven round season. The Division 1 Men’s and Women’s Pennant finals and the Division 2 Women’s Pennant final will be played at the Cranbourne Golf Club on Sunday 20 May.
