Gabrielle Upton appointed NSW Minister for Sport & Recreation

NSW Premier Barry O Farrell announced on Friday, 30th August that Gabrielle Upton has been appointed as Minister for Sport and Recreation. I m delighted to promote Gabrielle into Cabinet in recognition of her strong work as Parliamentary Secretary for Tertiary Education and Skills, Mr O Farrell said. Gabrielle will bring her skills in the education and medical research sector, as well as her six years service as Deputy Chair of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards, to the sport and recreation portfolio, he said. Her passion to increase grassroots participation of young people in sport and recreational activities will be a real strength. It’s vital we encourage people of all ages to remain active and involved in sport – not only does it help people remain fit and healthy, it is also an important social activity which promotes a sense of community. Gabrielle will continue to work with Minister for Tourism and Major Events George Souris to ensure Sydney remains the big event sports capital of Australia. Gabrielle was elected as the Member for Vaucluse at the 2011 election. Prior to entering Parliament, she worked in law and banking and was Deputy Chancellor of the University of NSW. Gabrielle is married with two children. Mr O Farrell has also appointed Cronulla MP Mark Speakman as Parliamentary Secretary for Tertiary Education and Skills.
