Goggin retains handy lead

Mathew Goggin took a significant step to his first PGA Tour victory when he grabbed a three-stroke lead after the third round at the Memorial tournament on Saturday. Goggin, who started the day tied for the lead with Kenny Perry, carded a one-under-par 71 on another windy day at the demanding Muirfield Village Golf Club. The Australian leads with an eight-under 208 total with one round left, while Mike Weir, Luke Donald, Kenny Perry, Matt Kuchar and Jerry Kelly were in a five-way tie for second at five under. Goggin isn&apost the only Australian in with a chance of victory with 18 holes remaining. Nick O&aposHern moved into a share of seventh and sits at four-under-par while Geoff Ogilvy is one stroke behind him. Stuart Appleby is even after the penultimate round. Goggin built a three-shot lead with two birdies in the first three holes, before the threat of lightning stopped play for more than two hours. The delay seemed to hurt his momentum, as he made just one birdie in the remainder of the round, not that they were easy to come by on a course with thick rough and slick greens. But he kept his mistakes to a minimum, making only two bogeys, to end the day in a great position to win the Jack Nicklaus-hosted event. Weir, meanwhile, hoped his experience would come in handy on Sunday. “Maybe my experience will help,” said the 2003 Masters champion, who will play in the final group with Goggin.
