Golf a hit at Secondary Schools

The final qualifying event for the SSV Secondary Schools Golf Event wrapped up today at both Riversdale and Murray Downs Golf Clubs. Since the first event back in February there have been 21 qualifying rounds at Victorian courses spanning far and wide across the state. The success of the event is largely due to the unification of Golf Victoria and School Sport Victoria’s participation pathway with the event model based on the popular Victorian Primary Schools event.

The 9-hole competition is modified to encourage the beginner to play yet also provide the skilled golfer a chance to make the state final. There are two sections for boys and girls; senior for students in years 10-12 and also junior for students in years 7-9.

The events have seen a variety of skill levels compete, from non -handicappers to Victorian state team representatives. In total there have been over 700 players compete in the qualifying section over the past three months with some very impressive scores! Earlier this week Tom Catoggio set Northern Golf Club alight with his round of -2 on the rain stricken day.

The senior state final will be contested at Churchill Park Golf Club on May 23 while the juniors have a little more time to wait with their final being played at Gardiners Run Golf Club on October 28.
