Golf at school is cool

Courtesy: The Scone Advocate www.sconeadvocate.com.au The future of golf in Scone is alive and well thanks to a junior golf program designed to inspire primary aged children to take up the sport. Scone Golf Club junior golf coordinator Gordon Halliday said the My Golf Schools 1 program was an excellent way for young people to learn about the game of golf. Jack Newton Junior Golf and Golf Australia have come up with this fantastic program which involves training community coaches from local golf clubs, bringing golf into primary schools as part of the sports curriculum and introducing youngsters to golf. Our (Scone) golf club now has nine qualified community coaches to assist local primary school aged students from years 3 to 6, Mr Halliday said. The coaches will be travelling to primary schools across Scone this year to deliver the popular program. In term one we are rolling out the program at Scone Public School, in term two we will be at Scone Grammar and in term four at St Mary s. We will also be teaching SOOSH students during the April school holidays. The program focuses on fun games and activities rather than formal golf lessons. Mr Halliday said this was the first time the program had been rolled out in Scone. As a club, we wanted to encourage more junior members to join and this program is the perfect way to achieve that, Mr Halliday said.
