Golf Australia Seniors to Take on the Defence Force

The Golf Australia Men’sSenior Team to play the Australian Defence Force at The National Golf Club, in Victoria, from March 16 17, was announced today. The team is Dave Morrison, Peter Terrace, Geoff Burke (QLD), Jack Parker, John Stephens, Geoffrey Everett (NSW), Pat Giles, David McDonald (VIC), Bill Wellington (TAS), Bob Gamsby (WA) and Tony Gover (ACT), and Team Manager, Pat Giles. The competition is played in a President s Cup format over two days, with 12 players per team, beginning with Fourball and Foursomes on the first day and Singles on the second day. The first GA versus ADF event was played at Tallwoods Golf Club in NSW in 2007 and went down to the last putt on the last green in the last match of the day for a drawn result, with the second match at Royal Queensland Golf Club also finishing in a tie. The Golf Australia Senior team is selected using the Australian Senior Amateur Ranking System as a basis, and also sees representation from as many states and territories as possible. In recent years the Australian Defence Forces Golf Association (ADFGA) has participated in matches between the ADF and teams from NSW, Victoria and Queensland. The ADF has played a NSWGA team for almost 20 years, against Victoria for 15 years and more recently against Queensland. These events have proven to be a great golfing and social success. It is Victoria s turn to host in 2009 and The National Golf Club set amongst the sand dunes of the Mornington Peninsula is a fitting venue, with both teams looking to a positive result Whilst we do have a couple of our top players unavailable due to Defence Force duties, we are fielding a strong side and believe we have the firepower to break the tied deadlock of the past two years said Flt. Lt. Daryl Bell, Captain of the ADF Team. After the dramatic ties of 2007 and 2008, The National clash will be a real showdown and if experience, guile and cunning counts for anything in golf, then Senior Team Australia will give a good account of themselves said team manager Pat Giles.
