Golf & outdoor sports expo set for Flinders Golf Club

In a world first, a group of enthusiastic young Australians bring to the stage a unique event that puts a whole new take on professional golf. To be held on the 100 year old Flinders Golf Course with the backdrop of Bass Strait and West Head, the event will include: Australia&aposs largest one-day Professional Golf Tournament. A Boat Show featuring the latest recreational boats and fishing experience. A Hot Rod Exhibition with some of the wildest hot rods and custom cars. Peter Wilson, a PGA Tour Player and a group of enthusiastic young Australians have joined forces to create an event like no other. “We wanted to create a different golf event more exciting with more for the spectators and the youth,” Wilson said. “A lot of us (professional golfers) play golf, surf and skate so why not put on an event that touches these elements as well?” There has been a lot of negative talk and speculation over the last few years about the decline of corporate and media attention to the Australian professional golf circuit and that the spectacle of the game has faded from its glory days and lost the public&aposs interest. He continued, “The fact is – the &aposgame&apos of golf has not changed – if anything it has only become better with better golf courses, better facilities & better equipment! “To increase the appeal of golf to the youth of today, we have created an event that brings together a vast demographic from all ages and walks of life.” The inaugural SmartCup Australian Invitational will be Australia&aposs largest one-day purse for golf and one of the largest one-day purses for Skating. “The PGA is delighted to confirm their support of the inaugural SmartCup Australian Invitational,” said David Podlich, Executive Officer of the Southern & Von Nida Tour. “We are delighted to be involved in this creative concept, where we will witness some of our countries great players and future stars of our sport.” The inaugural SmartCup Australian Invitational will take place on Saturday the 19th of January 2008 at Flinders Golf Course – right in the peak of summer holidays. With plenty of things to do it will be a jam-packed day of excitement with Australia&aposs best Professional Golfers and some of the best vert ramp Skaters from around the world. GOLF Professional Golf – PGA Administered – Invitational event only (entry criteria – winners of PGA Events 2007) THE FLINDERS GOLF CLUB Situated atop the cliff tops overlooking Bass Strait and Westernport Bay, Flinders provides a wonderful golfing experience combining the sense of tradition that comes with being over one hundred years old with top quality playing conditions. As you play the 4th hole, the coffin, let your mind wander back to the day in 1926 when the most famous golf course architect of them all, Dr Alistair Mackenzie convinced the committee of the day to change the hole from a Par 3 to introduce carries over both ravines. Or as you play the 5th, with the wind blowing in off Bass Strait, picture a young Peter Thomson honing his skills on this links style Par 5 in preparation for his assault on the Open Championship. A challenging and exciting day can be assured as the pro golfers engage on holes like “The Coffin,” “Beach Hole,” “Pine Gap,” “Shooting Gallery” and “Siberia.” SKATEBOARDING Professional Skateboarding Invitational event on the biggest ramp in the southern hemisphere! Invites are being sent to the top 40 skaters in the world.
