Golf SA Pennant – Finals Schedule & Preview
The 2014 Golf SA Metropolitan Pennant finals will be held on Sunday 13 July on the East Course at The Grange Golf Club.
For the sixth year running, the state's two premier club events, the Simpson Cup (Men) and Women's A1 (Women) will be held at the same venue on the same day. In a further celebration of the inter club competitions, Sunday's play will also feature finals for the Sharp Cup (Juniors) and Men's A2 grades.
In total 24 individual match play contests will be played on the day in what promises to be an exciting culmination of the 2014 Metropolitan Pennant season.
In the Simpson Cup final, The Grange will be looking to secure its first flag since winning three in a row from 2007 – 2009. Premiership number 22 awaits.
“There is a good feeling around the club with 4 teams in finals.” said Grange Team Manager Nick Cheary.
“We are confident but at the same time very respectful of Kooyonga who beat us last year. The players have prepared really well and worked really hard all year and all the state players in our squad have performed”. Cheary added
Kooyonga who are the defending champions, are gunning for its 33rd title.
“We are very confident in giving a good account, our preparation has been very good and I’m hoping our experience in finals over the last few years will help. We’re looking forward to it.” said Kooyonga Team Manager Geoff Raneberg.
When the sides met in round one, The Grange were victorious 5.5 – 1.5, with Andre Na, Ben Stowe, Matthew Lisk, Justin Crowder and Jack Williams all defeating their Kooyonga opponents. Jason Cocks was the only winner for Kooyonga at number six, while Grange number one Anthony Murdaca squared his match with Will Somerfield.
The Grange will be without Murdaca for the final due to tournament commitments in the US, so with all players having to move up a position, a closer final is predicted.
In the Women's A1 final, defending champions Glenelg will be looking for three titles in a row to take its championship tally to 21.
With Jenny Lee, Elysia Yap and Jill Hodge filling the top three positions, Matilda Wheare and Sarah Griffiths are expected to fill the final two places.
In the minor round Glenelg only dropped one individual match.
“We are only minor premiers by half a match and Grange will be fielding their strongest team in recent years” said Glenelg Team Manager Heather Waddy.
“Our side is a reformed side from the last two years with two new players Matilda Wheare and Sarah Griffiths. We are definitely looking forward to the test that The Grange will put to us”. Waddy added.
The Grange will be looking to claim its 5th title and first since victory in 2004. The Grange team will field three women’s state team representatives in Kristalle Blum, Ella Adams and Cassidy Evreniadis along with the experienced Louise Glennon. The final spot in the team will be taken by either Jean Foo or Jovanna Bozanic.
“Our girls have been working really hard and have been putting everything into it, it will be a very evenly matched final and should go down to the wire. We have a very cohesive team and are looking to bring the flag home to Grange”. said Grange Team Manager Belinda Singleton
The two sides were scheduled to meet in the final minor round contest last week, but play was cancelled due to unplayable conditions. With Glenelg only dropping one individual match in the minor round and The Grange two, it promises to be an extremely tight final.
Spectators are welcome at The Grange throughout the day to support their respective club sides.
