Round one of the Simpson Cup (Men's A Grade Pennant) was played on Sunday 14 May at Blackwood Golf Club with all results going as expected, with the top four teams from last year all picking up victories.
It was a tight tussle between the home side and the combined Southern District team with the match being locked away 2-2 early.
Blackwood’s Gavin Britten 3&1 and Riley Marshall 1up, secured matches two and three for the home side who were victorious in the end 4.5-2.5.
Glenelg started its season strongly winning 7-0 against The Vines with all players winning quite comfortably. Anthony Olsen, Josh Hayes and Sam Burton were pushed, but all prevailed 2&1.
Elevated team Thaxted Park gave last year’s finalist, The Grange a scare, picking up two early points, but state reps Andrew Nakone Jnr and Matthew Lisk claimed the top two matches for The Grange who prevailed 4.5-2.5.
Kooyonga started its season in fine style defeating Tea Tree Gully 7-0. It was a comprehensive victory for Kooyonga with the closest match a 2&1 victory to Will Somerfield over Jake Hurst.
Next week’s round two matches are held at The Grange (West) with the four winning sides from round one playing each other. The match of the round will be between The Grange and Kooyonga with the victor moving into a strong position on the ladder, while Glenelg plays Blackwood. In other matches, Southern will do battle against Thaxted Park and Tea Tree Gully play The Vines.
