Golf Victoria Seniors victorious against Australian Defence Force

The annual clash between the Golf Victoria Senior Team and the Australian Defence Force Golf Association concluded on Friday at the wonderful Sorrento Golf Club.

Both teams thank the Sorrento Golf Club for their wonderful hospitality and the use of their extraordinary course.

This prestigious annual event is eagerly anticipated by both the ADF representatives and the leading senior golfers in Victoria.

The top ten players from the Doug Bachli Order of Merit (OOM), from the previous year, are invited to represent Golf Victoria with a further two Captain’s picks making up the twelve team members.  The ADFGA team is made up of the highest quality players who are current members of the Australian Services and they determine their team from the results of their national championships which are conducted annually, at the Federal Golf Course, in Canberra.

This match-play event consists of 6 fourball and 6 foursomes matches, played on the Thursday, and concludes with 12 singles matches on the Friday.

For the second year running the Victorian Senior’s have come out on top with an excellent 14 matches to 10 result.

Congratulations to all players from both sides for the way in which this event was played.  There was a strong competitive element to all matches, but all were played in excellent spirit and a credit to the competitors.

Both teams had debutantes to the event this year with five first timers for the ADF and four for Golf Victoria.  I am sure that all these players will be striving to qualify for their respective teams next year after their wonderful experience this year.

Whilst this is very much a team event each team makes an individual award, each year, where it recognises a special contribution towards their respective teams.  The ADF this awarded their “Best and Fairest” trophy to Roy McLean and GV presented the “Paul Lulofs Medal” to Mark Abeyaratne.  Mark’s contribution, in winning all three of his matches, was significant enough but even more meritorious as he played his last 27 holes with an injured hand.
