Golf Victoria Seniors Victorious

Bitterly cold and windy conditions greeted the Golf Victoria Seniors and the ADF participants for their final 12 singles matches at the wonderful Sorrento Golf Club.

The Golf Victoria Seniors started the day with a 7 point to 5 lead after yesterday’s fourballs and foursomes.

The Golf Victoria team were out of the blocks quickly and were up in 9 of the matches very early on.  At one stage they were up in 10 matches and down in 1 with 1 square.

At this stage it looked like they might pick up the required 6 points that they needed to win overall, relatively easily.  However, true to their nature, the ADF staged a fight-back and late in the day they had won one match and six of the other matches had reverted to either being square or just one hole the difference.

However, the GV team members steeled themselves and managed to win 3 of those matches and halve two of them to produce an end result of 9 matches to 3 in the singles with the overall result being 16 matches to 8 in favour of the Golf Victoria Seniors.

There were some excellent individual performances on the day highlighted by the veteran, John Wheeler, defeating his opponent 9 and 7. John was only 2 over the card for the eleven holes played which was outstanding golf in the trying conditions. The “veterans veteran” Pat Giles won his match 4 and 3 and Greg Welsh added a 5 and 4 win to his two wins yesterday to be the only player from either team to pick up the maximum 3 points.

For his efforts Greg was awarded the prestigious Paul Lulofs Medal as the most outstanding player over the two days.

Other undefeated players, over the two days, were Tony Hyde, Guy Krall and John Wheeler from the Golf Victoria team and Rod Smylie from the ADF all of whom won 2 matches and halved 1.

Once again this was a most successful event with strong and determined efforts from all players and golf that was played in a spirit that all golf should be played. A Credit to both teams and all team members!
