Golf writers honoured at Australian Golf Media Awards

The Australian Golf Writers Association (AGWA) announced the winners of this year s Australian Golf Media Awards at a function in Sydney held in conjunction with the Emirates Australian Open at The Lakes Golf Club. The night was well supported by many of the major people in the Australian golf industry including Adam Scott who wore his U.S Masters green jacket for all to see. Of the awards presented, veteran golf writer Peter Stone won the Best Feature Story- Electronic Media (Internet) category while noted golf journalist Bernie McGuire (who is now based in the U.K) and the Herald Sun s Mark Hayes shared the award for Electronic Media (Internet) – Best News Report for their outstanding coverage of Adam Scott s win at the U.S. Masters in Augusta. Two of the country s well known professional golfers and golf course designers Geoff Ogilvy and Michael Clayton tied in the category of Best Column and were presented with their awards at the ceremony by Adam Scott whose banter with the duo was one of the highlights of the night. Veteran photographer Paul Shire, who has covered every Australian Masters since the event began, won the award for Best Photograph for an outstanding photograph of Stacey Keating celebrating her win at the Victorian Open earlier this year. The award winners were decided by a panel which included representatives from Golf Australia, the PGA of Australia and the Australian Ladies Professional Golf and includes Mr Bruce Baskett – a former member of the Australian Press Council and a former editor of the Melbourne Herald. The President of the Australian Golf Writers Association Mr. Brendan Moloney said he was pleased to see the golfing community again support the Australian Golf Media Awards which continue to grow in stature each year. The Australian Golf Writers Association congratulates the winners of the 2012 -2013 Australian Golf Media Awards, said Moloney. Now in their 18th year, the awards acknowledge excellence in writing, photography and broadcasting by AGWA members and non-members alike. The announcement of the winners is always a highlight of our annual dinner during the Australian Open. Nearly 200 entries for the 10 categories were received from Australia and overseas. As well as congratulating the winners, we d like to thank the judging panel of Peter Stone, Bruce Baskett, Hamish Jones, Nicole O Farrell and Sandy Lonergan.
