Golfers teeing off in the spirit of remembrance

Canberra s Federal Golf Club will be buzzing with golfing elite, amateurs and hackers alike today, as they take to the course in honour of the fallen as part of the Remembrance Golf initiative. Remembrance Golf Day, launched this year, saw golfers the country over hitting the courses and donating to Legacy Australia throughout the week of remembrance November 4-11. Events have continued this week, with all those taking to the course chipping in with a gold coin to assist Legacy in providing its vital services to the community. Legacy Australia, Chairman, Charles Wright said he’s very encouraged by the initial response to Remembrance Golf Day in its first year. Patriot Golf Day in the US has proved a hugely successful event recognising the immense sacrifice made by deceased veterans. It’s our hope that Remembrance Golf Day in Australia becomes a regular feature on the calendars of golf clubs here. We re very pleased with the turnout in 2012, and look forward to more clubs throughout the nation getting on-board in 2012. The Royal Canberra Golf Club led the way hosting the first Remembrance Day Golf event, and the Chief of the Defence Force, General David Hurley took to the course to help drive support around the initiative. Hundreds of golfers went eighteen rounds on the day, raising funds for Legacy. Today at the Federal Golf Course a number of Defence personnel will be out in force, swapping their uniforms for sporting attire and various events are happening at golf courses across Australia all in honour of those who have given everything for their country. Gavin Larkings, President and CEO CSC Australia, said CSC is proud to be the National Foundation Partner for Remembrance Golf Day. We work very closely with Defence and have over 8,000 employees globally who are military veterans . 1500 golf clubs around Australia were asked to participate this year by simply asking each player to contribute an extra $1 on their green fees. Remembrance Golf Day has been initiated by Golf Australia, Legacy and the Australian Defence Force. It is based on the highly successful US Patriots Golf Day, started in the US by Major Dan Rooney in 2007. For more information on Remembrance Golf Day click here
