Goss and Elliott win WA State Amateurs

WA MEN S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP Royal Fremantle s Oliver Goss won the State Men’sAmateur Championship in a hard fought match at Mount Lawley Golf Club. Goss, who was selected to the 2012 Junior National Squad, defeated fellow West Australian Brady Watt (Royal Perth) on the 36th hole in a heated battle that went the distance. Watt looked to be in control after he was 3up after the 24th hole, but Goss maintained his composure and pushed the match to the 36th. 17-year-old Goss never held the lead at any point in the afternoon round until the final hole where he dropped a 35-foot putt to seal the victory. I hadn t been dropping any putts like that all day, so it was great timing to finally get one, Goss said. It was a tough pin placement down wind and I was just happy to hit the green. Then to drop the putt was the icing on the cake . Brady played really well and forced me to play my best. I have to admit I was bit concerned when he had 4 birdies in a row to go 3up, but I was able to capitalise on a mistake he made on the 25th and I pulled through in the end. WA WOMEN S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP Victorian and National Squad member Breanna Elliott won the State Amateur Championship 4&3 over fellow Victorian Grace Lennon at Mount Lawley Golf Club. Australian Number 1 Elliott was only 1up after the morning round, but found her form in the afternoon to give her the edge on Medallist and Australian Number 4 Lennon. Elliott got into a rhythm as the match progressed including an eagle on the par 4 10th where she hit the pin off the tee. It was hard playing against Grace as we re quite good mates, Breanna said. I felt like I played well yesterday and thankfully it carried over into today. As for the future, I plan to play in amateur events over in the United States. I ll attend PGA tour school in September, but unless I get my card I ll continue to play amateur golf for another year.
