Green, Appleby off the pace

A stunning start to the second round has seen Harris English storm into a two-stroke lead at the St Jude Classic in Tennessee, while round one leaders Stuart Appleby and Nathan Green dropped off the pace on Friday (local time). English, who has never won a PGA Tour event, birdied the opening three holes at TPC Southwind, before notching an eagle on the fifth hole to complete a five-under front nine. The 23-year-old American also birdied the 15th and 16th holes before a bogey on the last saw him post a six-under 64 to finish the second round on 10 under overall, two shots clear of Shawn Stefani and with a five-stroke gap on Paul Haley II and Scott Stallings, who are tied for third. Australians Appleby and Green plummeted down the leaderboard with over-par rounds. While Appleby&aposs hopes of winning the St Jude Classic remain alive after a one-over 71 left him seven shots adrift of English, Green self-destructed – shooting a five-over 75 to end the round on one over for the tournament. Stefani flew up the leaderboard in Memphis with a five-under 65 to reach eight under for the tournament, while Haley II and Stallings both carded two-under 68s on their way to five under overall with two rounds to play. Haley II and Stallings have a one-shot gap on Davis Love III, Glen Day, Justin Hicks, Doug LaBelle II and Nicholas Thompson.
