Green, Buckle in the hunt

Australian duo Nathan Green and Andrew Buckle are just two shots off the lead after the opening round of the Viking Classic in Mississippi. Green and Buckle shot five-under-par rounds of 67 to be in a share of third place, just two strokes behind American Marc Turnesa (65) and veteran Brian Gay (66). Five birdies in his first seven holes helped Buckle get off to a blistering start, but a bogey at eight dropped him back to four-under. A birdie at 13 was offset by a bogey at 17, but Buckle responded well by making a tough birdie at the long par-five 18th to finish his round in style. Green was just as impressive in his round, with the underrated New South Welshman making six birdies and one bogey at the picturesque Annandale Golf Club. Of the other Australians competing, Nick Flanagan fired a 68 to be tied for ninth, while Steve Allan and Gavin Coles were the only other Aussies to finish the day under par after rounds of 71. Compatriots Jason Day and Brett Rumford fired 73s, David Lutterus carded a 74, while John Senden (75), Matt Jones (76), Mark Hensby (78) and Stuart Deane (78) had disappointing opening days.
