Fine but blustery conditions greeted players at the magnificent Sorrento Golf Club this morning for the annual Golf Victoria Seniors Vs Australian Defence Forces Golf Association event.
The event staged over two days is conducted in the format of a Presidents/Ryder Cup.
Twelve players from each side play 4BBB in the morning and Foursomes in the afternoon of day 1; followed by 12 singles matches on day 2.
Day 1 4BBB: This morning’s fourball matches produced some excellent golf in the windy conditions.
The Victorian Seniors combination of David Robb and Ross Percy were first out against their ADF opponents, Joel Standring and Tim Holmes. Robb played some excellent golf, particularly early, and then was ably supported by his partner Percy and they had a comprehensive victory 4 and 2.
The ADF were quick to even things up though with their pairing of Kim Johansen and his team captain, Chris Sarquis defeating Ray Walker and Greg Welsh 6 and 5.
Both teams have debutantes to the event this year with five first timers for the ADF and four for Golf Victoria. All matches were hard fought, and played in excellent spirit, and GV finished the morning’s play with a one match lead (3.5 to 2.5).
Day 1 Foursomes: The afternoon foursomes were played in warmer and less windy conditions.
The biggest test in this afternoon session was the difficult foursomes format with partnership and patience imperative. Following on from the morning, the Golf Victoria Senior team members acquitted themselves well and delivered a, 4 matches to 2 score-line for their team.
Two matches went to the 18th hole with the GV team winning both.
GV Seniors take a 3-game lead into Friday’s twelve singles matches and the match ups are mouth-watering. All matches are bound to be contested keenly and the result, very much, could go either way.
