Australian journeyman Scott Hend has fired a five-under-par 67 to move to within one stroke of the lead heading into the final round of the BMW Asian Open in Shanghai. Frenchman Raphael Jacquelin continued to set the pace out front, shooting a 70 to go to 11-under but Hend soared into contention after an excellent third round punctuated by seven birdies saw him move into outright second place on 10-under. Scot Simon Yates had the best round of the day, equalling the course record with an eight-under 64 that saw him surge into a tie for third alongside Dane Soren Kjeldsen (68) and Swede Joakin Backstrom (68). Hot on their heels is a trio including another Scot, Colin Montgomerie, who sits at eight-under after firing a round of 69, while world No.5 Ernie Els from South Africa is six-under. Hend made a brilliant start to his third round, carding a birdie on the par 4 first, before firing three further birdies on the front nine – plus a bogey on the third – as he went out in 33. His back nine was almost as impressive, with three birdies and one bogey. “I&aposm as close as I&aposve been for a long time,” said Hend, who is currently fourth on the Asian Tour&aposs UBS Order of Merit after two runner-up finishes this season. “But there are a lot of other guys out there that I&aposve got to beat and one of them is myself.” “If I can manage to control myself and win the battle with myself, then I will have a chance that it could happen. There&aposs 18 holes to go and it&aposs a long way.” “Sometimes, I want to hit a driver in places where it doesn&apost really fit. It&aposs those little battles in the head when you go &aposI want to hit it, I want to hit it&apos and then go &aposno, no no&apos.” Hend spent two years on the US PGA Tour in 2004 and 2005 before losing his card. He then suffered town muscles in his left hand last year which set him back even further but earned a card on the Asian Tour through qualifying school. Of the other Australians, Adam Blyth is the best-placed to make a late charge after a third-round 67 saw him move to five-under for the tournament. David Bransdon and Tony Carolan are one stroke behind him on four-under.
