Hend hurries into contention

A hole-in-one has rocketed Australian Scott Hend up the leaderboard at the Maekyung Open Golf Championship. Korea&aposs Jun Tae-hyun fired a four-under-par 68 to join frontrunner Hwang In-choon at the top of the field at the halfway stage, but Hend provided the highlights on day two. Hend launched a second-day assault with a red-hot round of 67 to get within five shots of the leaders. Compatriot Mitchell Brown (72) turned in another consistent performance to be level with Hend. Hend rose up the rankings thanks to a hole-in-one at the par three 11th hole and now shares 14th place. Jun fired five birdies against a lone bogey for a six-under-par 138 total and finished alongside Hwang, who improved with an impressive 67 at the Nam Seoul Country Club. The duo hold a one-stroke advantage over in-form teenager Noh Seung-yul who remained in the hunt after a solid 70 and was tied third with overnight leader Kang Ji-man, who slipped off the lead after an even-par performance. Defending champion Kim Kyung-tae returned a 71 to stay firmly in contention in tied seventh place alongside Kim Do-hoon III who recorded his second straight 70 for a 140 total. Starting on the back nine, Jun joined the morning leader Hwang at the top of the field after a solid 68. Local amateur Jeong Yeon-jin produced a 71 for a two-day total of 144 alongside Rhys Davies of Wales and New Zealander Eddie Lee who posted a 68 and a 72 respectively. A total of 74 players made the weekend rounds when the cut was set at four-over-par 148.
