On a typically clear and glorious Northern Rivers day, over 50 young golfers enjoyed the Mullumbimby Golf Course in the most recent Junior Open Day in the Northern Rivers Order of Merit Series. Golfers from Ballina, Casino, Coolangatta-Tweed Heads, Mullumbimby, Murwillumbah, Lismore, Ocean Shores and Iluka competed in the second to last event in the 2013 Order of Merit Series. Several of the competitions are getting close and all the “guns” were out to try and get those last minute points.
The Junior Boys section was hotly contested with Lucas Higgins (+1) holding off Jay Mackenzie (0) by a shot with Jacob Tonkin (2) a further shot back in third. Lucas believes he has done enough to win the NRDGA Order of Merit so it is up to the other boys to fight for the minor placing’s. The Junior Boys nett event was won by a newcomer to the OOM series, Callen Stubbs (CTH) with a nett score of 70. Callen scrapped home on a count back from his club mate, the consistent Sean Godwin.
The Junior Girls section again attracted a small but competitive field. Madeline Trew (Murwillumbah) again won the gross event ahead of Eleka Moore (Ballina) and Ashlee Selwood (Murwillumbah). It looks like Madeline’s lead in the OOM series will carry her through to the finish at the final event at Byron Bay.
A good field of young golfers participated in the nine-hole cadet event with the emerging talent of Tom Partridge (Murwillumbah) again holding off the competition with a score of 44. Tom won the gross event in the Cadet Boys section by two shots from the consistent Jack Harlen-Robertson (Lismore). In the expectation that both of these boys will be moving up to the Junior Boys section next year, the competition will continue in 2014. Other good scores (47 shots) were recorded by Ryan Bigg (Ballina) and Isaac Outridge (CTH). The Cadet Girls event was won by Grace Matthews (CTH). Grace has only appeared on the Northern Rivers OOM scene in recent tournaments but her consistent form may see her feature in the final OOM wash-up at Byron Bay.
