Report – Lesley Monfort (Mid North District)
Open Days benefit clubs, participants and golf for all.
Every year the majority of all Golf Clubs throughout South Australia open their doors to visitors and put on a special “Open Day” to allow participants to play and experience their course, meet the members and enjoy the hospitality of the club.
Women Golfers especially have the opportunity, throughout the year, to play in over 100 Open Day events in South Australia. The games, the cost of entry, the courses, the prizes and the skill level of participants vary considerably, but two things they all have in common is the participants love for the game and the renewal of old and the making of new friends in a wonderful atmosphere.
The last Open Day for this year was held at Highercombe Golf and Country Club. Usually held at the end of October, with a Halloween theme, the weather, which impacted on many clubs this year, forced Highercombe to postpone their event until December. Members from the Mid North, Metro and surrounding areas were greeted with champagne on arrival and played Pinehurst instead of the usual stableford competition.
The winners of the day were:
Meegan Button/Highercombe & Lesley Montfort/ Tanunda Pines Nett 71 ¾
Fiona Hockings /Carolyn Roockie Barossa Nett 77 ¼
Val Cassidy /Deb Cooper North Adelaide Nett 78 ¾
Prizes on the day consisted of Paracombe Wine packs Callaway Caps and Callaway golf balls with the prize rundown going to 12th place thanks to the On course Pro Shop .
Lunch was a Christmas feast consisting of Baked Ham, Roast Turkey , Potato Bake and various Salads followed by dessert which was Christmas Pudding with Brandy custard Mince Pies and Pavlova prepared by Meegan Button who does the catering for the Highercombe Golf club and ably assisted by the Highercombe Ladies.
Jane Hayes, Highercombe Ladies Captain commented that “The day in all was a great success enjoyed by all that came and the comments about the friendliness of our club and how good the food is was very positive. We are only a small Ladies club but we do our best to make everyone who visits feel welcome so they will come back again.
We have decided to do the same next year with a Christmas theme and a Pinehurst Competition.
A big thankyou to all that attended and to all the wonderful Highercombe Ladies for making the day a great success.”
Participating in Open Days contributes financially to the host club and enables players to extend their golfing skills be experiencing different courses in a friendly atmosphere of competition. Utilising GolfSA’s website also provides another means of promotion to which clubs have access to spread the word. With only a few weeks left in this year, the programme for Open Days in 2017 kicks off early in the New Years. Good Golfing to all.
