Holman on top early in Malaysia

Melbourne’s Nathan Holman is at it again – this time leading the Maybank Championship Malaysia.

The Golf Australia rookie squad member, already riding high after winning the Australian PGA Championship in December, leads at Royal Selangor after shooting a seven-under-par 64 in round one.

Holman, 24, is fresh from a week off after three consecutive top-35 finishes in his maiden European Tour season put him in 10th position in the tour’s lucrative season-long Race to Dubai.

And it showed with some crisp iron play and lovely putting.

“I just played really well to be honest,” Holman said.

“Every part of my game was good and I was saying a few weeks ago that my game has been trending in the right direction, so it was nice to get a really low one in.

“The course suits my eye. I like the look of it, and that’s obviously shown in the score I had today so I’m looking forward to playing the next three days.”

Holman sits ahead of a quality group of players on a bunched leaderboard, with world No.13  Danny Willett hot on his heels after a 65 alongside Angelo Que, Tommy Fleetwood, Peter Uihlein, Alex Levy and Jorge Campillo.
