Immelman masters Augusta

South Africa&aposs Trevor Immelman has won the 2008 Masters in Augusta. Immelman&aposs final-round 75 was good enough to hold the field, headed by world No.1 Tiger Woods, at bay. He ended the opening major of the year eight-under-par, three strokes clear of Woods (72). Stewart Cink (72) and Immelman&aposs playing partner Brandt Snedeker (77) were locked in a share of third place, two shots ahead of Phil Mickelson and Padraig Harrington. Stuart Appleby fired a one-under-par 71 to finish his week the best of the Australians at one-over-par, nine shots behind the winner and tied for 14th. Adam Scott had 76 in the fourth round to be four-over-par for the week and even with eight players in 25th place. Further down the leaderboard, Geoff Ogilvy posted a two-over 74 to finish on eight-over in total, one stroke ahead of Robert Allenby, who had a Sunday he would rather forget, signing his name to a nine-over 81 that saw him finish on 11-over overall. Immelman survived a late scare to win his first major, but less than four months ago he would have been happy just to play in it. Operated on in December for a tumour on his diaphragm – to his huge relief it was found to be benign rather than cancerous – Immelman defied gusty winds and a star studded field. Immelman was six clear and cruising with four to play and still five ahead on the 16th tee, but he then pulled into the water for a double bogey five there. When he hit his approach to the 17th into the guarding bunker there was a look of horror and shock on his face. With Woods having just made a 12-footer for birdie on the last to post five-under, Immelman was in danger of bogeying and going to the last only two in front. But he bravely got up and down and when he got a superb drive away down the 465-yard last he let out a sigh of relief. What he did not know was that it finished in a deep divot hole, but getting it on the green meant the job was done. Nobody has ever shot higher in the last round to become Masters champion, that mattered little to him.
